When the days become noticeably shorter and temperatures drop, many motorists remember that it is time to change to winter tyres. After all, this is an important step towards greater safety on the roads.

But what should you bear in mind when it comes to laying the foundations for the smoothest possible tyre change? And is it even worth changing your tyres in flatter areas?

You should remember all the important steps in good time. Whether you visit a car repair shop or change the tyres yourself, when it comes to safety in winter road conditions, there should be no compromises.

The basics: When should you switch to winter tyres?

Even though many drivers like to go with their gut feeling and regularly follow the weather forecast in autumn, there is a kind of ‘standard rule’ that can almost always be applied: ‘From O to E!’, which means ‘From October to Easter’. During this period, it is definitely advisable to use winter tyres – even in the flatter regions of Switzerland.

When temperatures drop and there is perhaps even snow on the ground, winter and summer tyres behave very differently. One reason for this is that the two types of tyre have different tread patterns and rubber compounds. The corresponding differences are particularly noticeable in winter road conditions at temperatures of 7°C and below. Winter tyres offer more grip and better traction. This makes the car safer on the road and allows it to brake faster and come to a standstill in an emergency.

For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned at this point that it would also be counterproductive to simply drive on winter tyres all year round. This is because above approximately 7°C, the advantages of summer tyres outweigh those of winter tyres. However, before it is time to switch back to them in the spring, temperatures should be consistently above the 7°C mark, even at night. Your car repair shop can change your tyres quickly and professionally for you.

Is it a criminal offence to not change your tyres?

Each country enacts its own laws with regard to the relevant requirements. In Switzerland, the relevant road traffic law does not stipulate that motorists must change to winter tyres. Nevertheless, drivers are obliged to ensure that their vehicle meets the specified safety requirements at all times.

This means that if, for example, you are driving your Volvo and have an accident because you are using summer tyres, you may be penalised for this. In addition, your insurance company may refuse to cover the damage because you have not fulfilled your obligation to keep your car roadworthy.

If you want to avoid a penalty and play it safe, you should always follow the ‘O to E’ rule mentioned above.

Are all-weather tyres a good alternative?

It sounds practical: motorists who don’t want to change their tyres every six months often opt for so-called ‘all-weather tyres’ or ‘all-season tyres’. It is important to bear in mind that this option is a kind of compromise, which is often sufficient but offers room for improvement in both winter and summer. The corresponding disadvantages are often evident in terms of braking distance and road grip. Winter tyres are clearly superior on snow and ice, while summer tyres impress on dry roads with shorter braking distances and better handling.

Those who do not drive too often or who have the option of leaving their vehicle at home in heavy snowfall may find all-weather tyres a practical solution. However, if you do not want to compromise on road safety, you should definitely opt for the seasonal combination of winter and summer tyres.

Winter tyres or all-season tyres: which is the better choice?

All-season tyres are practical because they eliminate the need for a biannual change, saving time and garage costs. However, this also means that tyres usually wear out faster because they are used all year round. Those who drive a lot or experience different road and weather conditions must therefore expect to replace their tyres more frequently.

Another point to consider is that all-season tyres reach their limits more quickly in extreme weather conditions. While they perform well in mild winters, winter tyres offer clear advantages in heavy snowfall or on icy roads. On the other hand, if you only drive short distances and mainly in city traffic, all-season tyres may well be a good choice. If you drive a lot in winter or at higher altitudes, winter tyres are definitely safer. This is because all-season tyres quickly reach their limits in these conditions and have a longer braking distance and less grip.

In Switzerland, seasonal tyres are generally the better choice, as snow and ice can quickly appear in winter. This ensures safety at all times. Frequent drivers are best advised to switch between winter and summer tyres. Occasional drivers can use all-weather tyres, but must expect limitations in terms of safety and driving comfort, especially in snow and ice.

The ultimate checklist for switching to winter tyres

To ensure you remember everything when changing your tyres next time, here is a detailed explanation of the most important points: practical, easy to understand and directly applicable in everyday life. This will ensure you always drive safely with your winter or summer tyres while also protecting the material.

1. Check the tread depth

The tyre tread is crucial for grip on wet, icy or dry roads. It wears down over time – faster or slower depending on your driving style and where you drive. Winter tyres should have at least 4 mm of tread depth remaining, and summer tyres at least 3 mm, to ensure complete safety. Although the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, in practice braking performance deteriorates noticeably below this level. You should therefore check your tyres regularly and plan to replace them in good time.

2. Check the tyre pressure

Every tyre loses air over time, regardless of whether you drive mainly on the motorway or in the city. Incorrect tyre pressure leads to higher fuel consumption, uneven wear and unsafe handling. You should therefore check your tyre pressure every two to three weeks or before long journeys. Tip: Slightly higher air pressure is usually better than too little air. If you are unsure, car garages such as Hüsser & Palkoska will be happy to check it for you.

3. Check the tyre age (DOT number)

Even if the tread is still deep enough, tyres should not be used indefinitely. As they age, the rubber compound hardens and grip decreases. You can tell the age by the DOT number stamped on the sidewall of the tyre. It consists of at least eight digits. The abbreviation ‘DOT’ is followed by a code of letters and numbers that contains information about the place of manufacture, the tyre size and, in some cases, the manufacturer. However, the four-digit number at the end is the most important for you. This stands for the week and year of production (e.g. 2319 = 23rd week of 2019). After around four years, it is advisable to replace the tyres completely – regardless of how good they still look.

4. Check for damage to the rims

Cracks, scratches or dents on the rims are not just a cosmetic problem. They can compromise safety, accelerate tyre wear or even prevent the tyre from sealing properly. It is particularly important to check carefully after contact with kerbs. If you are unsure, it is advisable to have the rims inspected by a specialist workshop.

5. Make an appointment and store your wheels

Not everyone has the opportunity or desire to change their tyres themselves. At Hüsser & Palkoska, experienced professionals take care of the entire service: from quick changes to checking tread depth, air pressure and rims to professional storage in our in-house tyre hotel.

Storage in particular offers many advantages. Your winter or summer tyres are stored in suitable, dry and cool rooms, which extends their service life. You also save space at home and don’t have to worry about finding the right place to store them. When storing tyres, we also recommend increasing the tyre pressure by around 0.5 bar. This helps the tyres retain their shape and ensures they are ready for immediate use the next time they are fitted.

Make an appointment for a tyre change now and start the next season relaxed and safe.
