The electric car is no longer a fantasy. It has also left behind the status of revolutionary novelty. Volvo is currently experiencing a massive evolution of the concept. This clearly proves that the idea of an electric drive was only the beginning. These are exciting times we live in. So we thought it was time to talk about all the advantages that an electric car has to offer. I bet you haven’t heard them all yet.

A long time ago, a carriage builder lived in a small town. His grandfather had built horse-drawn carriages because his father and grandfather had done the same. So had his father and finally he. One could rightly speak of a traditional business. In fact, his ancestors had had some great ideas, which he cultivated with the greatest devotion. For example, he regularly pointed out to his customers that his carriages were built exactly as they had been 100 years ago. He also mentioned that proven technology simply could not be surpassed. A statement that could not be doubted. Why build something new when the old still worked so well? The horse-drawn carriage had long since reached the pinnacle of its evolution and there was no reason to change anything. “Should we eventually have six-legged horses, I will ignore grandpa’s suggestions. Until then, everything will stay as it is!” was a phrase the carriage maker regularly uttered. And then came the car …

For the old carriage builder, automobiles were a superfluous fad. “But we have enough horses!” he shouted when a neighbour tried to convince him of the advantages of the automobile. But the neighbour did not give up and insisted on explaining his car to him in every detail.

So the two stood in front of the new vehicle for an hour. The neighbour talked about the carburettor and explained what the air filter was doing. He showed the coachbuilder the spark plugs. He demonstrated the high beam, the fog lights and talked about ABS, ESC and dry sump lubrication (we realise that some of these things didn’t exist back then, but it’s a fairy tale …).

The old carriage builder listened to him patiently. Now and then he asked questions along the lines of “And what does that thing in front do?”. Then the neighbour explained him that it was a container for the windscreen washer system. Or that the pipe at the end of the car was called an exhaust pipe. When he finally finished, the carriage maker scratched his head and said, “A lot of stuff that can break on the way.” And that was the end of the subject for him.

Even if the car eventually prevailed, the old man was right on this point. Cars contain a lot of “stuff that can break”. Electric cars represent a turnaround here. Instead of always building complicated engines, everything is simplified again. An electric car doesn’t need a carburettor because no fuel is burnt. For the same reason, it does not need an air filter. There are no aggressive substances that attack the fuel lines and no spark plugs or ignition banks that “might just start spinning” when it is absolutely inappropriate. In fact, many components fall away as soon as fuel is no longer burnt. Whether that would have appeased the old coach builder, we don’t know. But it should still be mentioned.

In Germany, the government is currently cracking down because pollution levels in some cities are still far too high. The bad air makes children, adults, animals and plants sick. A large part of these harmful gases come from cars with combustion engines. An electric car does not blow pollutants into the air. No matter where it drives: The air remains clean!

Anyone who has tried to have a conversation next to a busy road has found that it is not so easy. Those who live in the countryside have an advantage here. “City people”, on the other hand, don’t have to walk to the main road to get the noise. It is omnipresent and does not necessarily raise the quality of life, apart from the “bad neighbour” who regularly comes home at three in the morning and wakes up the whole street with his loud engine. Electric cars, on the other hand, are truly quiet.

The other day at the quarter-mile race … an electric car actually beat a horsepower monster to victory. How could that be? It had much less horsepower! The magic word is torque (and speed): If you have 400 hp in a car with an internal combustion engine, this is only available at a certain speed. And the revs have to build up first, but drop again immediately when you change gear. An electric car on the other hand, has maximum torque and power from the first second. And they don’t have to change gears, which means that the “power” is not interrupted at any second. If Burt Reynolds had been able to do that with his Trans Am in “A Cutthroat”, the police would have had even less of a chance …

The development of the horse-drawn carriage came to an end at some point. A petrol-driven car will always need petrol. But we will not discover a “new oil genre”. The development of electric cars is inextricably linked to the topic of alternative energies. And it is precisely here that progress has not even begun to “warm up”. Environmentally friendly energies are massively on the advance and every step forward will also influence the electric car. We have only just begun to research environmentally friendly fuel cells. Maybe in 10 years we will have electric cars on the road that permanently generate their own electricity via a built-in solar roof. We are only at the beginning and it is already so exciting.

Whatever may come: Hüsser & Palkoska AG will accompany you on this path. We are looking forward to it!

The electric car is no longer a fantasy. It has also left behind the status of revolutionary novelty.
